Going Beyond Small Talk

Asking better questions and "shared reality"

Hi everyone,

In the latest video, I shared some of the ways I personally take conversations deeper, as well as what the research has to say.

We can make everyday conversations more engaging and meaningful by doing things like asking insight-driven questions or by practicing engaged listening.

What stood out most to people I talked with afterwards was the idea of "shared reality" and how finding what we have in common is a natural path to deeper connection.

Someone said it’s already shifting how he looks at people in his life: noticing what makes their current experience similar to his, instead of seeing what sets them apart.

I said this reminded me of a lyric from my favorite album:

I think Paul Simon is playfully going for shared reality

Paul Simon, Graceland tour, 1987

If you haven’t seen it yet, I made a brief guide combining the insights from both conversation videos in the series (along with how to gracefully exit).

Upcoming Exploration:

My next video explores the one nonverbal behavior people ask me about more than anything else.

Thanks for reading and being part of the journey with me.

Until Next Time,
